Elopements

Australian adventure elopement photographer, based on the sunshine coast

You find yourself saying “how is this is even our wedding day!” You’re feeling like you never thought it could be so extraordinary.

A day full of adventure and freedom.

Exchanging vows in a breathtaking landscape, with nothing but the vast wilderness as the witness to your love story (and of course, your two actual witnesses).

Sounds like a dream, doesn't it? Well, for adventurous souls seeking an unconventional yet deeply meaningful way to say "I do," an Adventure Elopement might just be the perfect fit.

In the realm of weddings, there’s a rising trend that’s breaking away from tradition and embracing a more adventurous spirit; the Adventure Elopement. Adventure Elopements are all about stripping away the stress and extravagance of a traditional wedding and focusing on what truly matters – the love between two individuals and their connection to the great outdoors. These are not your average walk-down-the-aisle affairs; rather, they are bold, daring, and filled with a sense of wanderlust.

So, what exactly is an Adventure Elopement, you ask?

Adventure Elopements are more than just a wedding; they’re an experience.

It’s about choosing a location that speaks to your sense of adventure. Whether it's a windswept coastline, a tranquil forest, or a majestic desert landscape, the possibilities are endless.

No location is too remote, and no adventure is too daring.

It’s about embracing spontaneity and continuing to write your own love story, free from the constraints of convention.

Adventure Elopements are experiences that strengthen the bond between you and your partner partners and serve as a reminder of the adventurous spirit that brought you together in the first place.

Let’s delve into some practical tips and consideration  for planning an Adventure Elopement.

Permits and Regulations
Before you set off on your adventure, be sure to research any permits or regulations required for your chosen location. This ensures a smooth and hassle-free experience on your special day.

Choosing a Location
When selecting a location for your Adventure Elopement, consider factors such as accessibility, scenery, and significance to you and your partner. Research potential locations ahead of time, and if possible, visit in person to ensure it meets your expectations and logistical needs.

Who to invite
Adventure Elopements often don't really align with guest lists for several reasons, including logistical challenges, environmental impact, choosing ceremony locations becomes difficult, and the nature of the adventure itself. Usually an Adventure Elopement “guest list” will include your photographer, your celebrant, and two specially chosen witnesses. I’m not saying you cannot include your family and friends, because absolutely you can! It just will look a little different.

Consider sunrise or sunset
Both offer a magical touch with golden hues, and sometimes vibrant colours. Although sunrise Adventure Elopements are obviously early starts, it does mean that there is the opportunity to have a boozy lunch with family and friends after! Plus, it’s likely fewer people will be around.

Adventure Elopement Planning Tips and Considerations

Weather Contingency Plans
Nature can be unpredictable, so it's essential to have backup plans in case of inclement weather. Consider packing extra layers, umbrellas, or tents to provide shelter if needed, and be flexible with your timeline to accommodate changes in weather conditions.

Choosing the Perfect Outfits
Opt for attire that not only complements your surroundings but also allows you to move freely and comfortably. Think flowy dresses and rugged boots.

Legalities
While Adventure Elopements offer a sense of freedom and spontaneity, it’s important to remember the legal aspects. Make sure you obtain the necessary marriage license (usually 1 month before your chosen date) and consider any legal requirements for your chosen location. Your Celebrant will support you with this.

Personalise Your Ceremony
Embrace the freedom of an adventure elopement by personalising your ceremony to reflect your unique love story. Write your own vows, incorporate meaningful rituals, and let your personalities shine through.

Safety First
Safety should always be prioritised during an Adventure Elopement. Whether you’re hiking to a remote location or braving the elements, always be prepared and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Pack a first aid kit, navigation tools, and emergency supplies such as food, water, and a communication device. Make sure someone knows your itinerary and check-in points in case of an emergency.

Leave No Trace Principles
Respect the environment and leave the natural beauty of your chosen location undisturbed by adhering to Leave No Trace principles. Pack out all trash, stay on designated trails, and minimize your impact on flora and fauna.

If you're drawn to the idea of an adventure elopement and want to make your wedding day truly unforgettable, I encourage you to explore the possibilities.
